stool 01/2015, 15x22, transparent watercolour on
140lb arches watercolour paper.
from the studies that preceeded this painting, the difficulties of
perspective and complexity are apparent. my first sheet became so worn
from erasures that I resorted to using white gouache to clean up areas
enough to pick out the paths of individual strands of wicker – an icon
of a humourous drawing gone terribly obtuse.
and all for a strange composition with three possibly freudian objects
crushed against the top edge of the sheet by a fragile disintegrating
structure. what may lie hidden from many is the hazardous thrill of
pouring a loose wash onto a work requiring many days of intense concentration.
