apple, pears and desiccated orchid

apple, pears, and desiccated orchid, 11/2012, 12x20, pencil and transparent watercolour on 70lb zerkall-buetten wavy laid paper.

this image illustrates why still life can be so satisfying. still evident is the descriptive marks that built the forms on the page independent of light and shade.

i tried to retain those delicate marks by just adding colour in small strokes to accentuate the drawing.

the container, a hand built stoneware bowl was created by draping a sheet of clay across a plaster sphere. the natural undulations of the vessel made an inviting nest to arrange the funeral of an orchid. sensuous fruit is nestled among the dried roots and leaves of one more orchid that i somehow killed. and then last dry flower, highlights the huge mass above.
